The Erie County Board of Elections will hold a special election on Tuesday, February 28, 2023, where voters in the City of Sandusky will decide whether they’d like to manage their public park lands or if they’d like their city government to continue doing so.
A decision by the Ohio Supreme Court ruled – after an exchange between city officials and the Sanduskians for Sandusky – that the election must be held 120 days within its November 2022 ruling. City officials asked the court to hold off on the election until November 2023. However. That request was denied.
The charter amendment will mandate a vote of Sandusky residents if or when Sandusky’s government decides to sell, lease or privately develop our historic parks. Battery Park is one of the public parks the city has been interested in developing for years. The city’s proposed development plans for the area of Battery Park include condominiums, hotels and apartments as well as retail space. A total of 33 acres would be redeveloped.
The master plan includes: Public open space (9.17 acres) with public amenities and expanded access to the water; public parking structures including 964 spaces, and about 48 on-street public parking spaces; extension of Water Street and Market Street and a new public street Sandusky Harbor Drive with broad sidewalks and landscape.
The proposed development includes three primary structures: a residential mix of 68 condominiums and 172 apartments; a hotel with 120 to 130 keys and first floor retail space with the total gross square footage of 57,767 and a marina with approximately 530 boat slips.
